What to Eat on a GLP-1: A Beginner's Guide

Written by the GLP-1 Living team · Reviewed August 15, 2026

Starting GLP-1 medication changes your relationship with food almost overnight. Your appetite shrinks, meals last longer in your stomach, and the old rules about eating more simply stop applying. The new question is different: with so little appetite, how do you make every bite count?

This beginner's guide keeps it simple. Four priorities, in order, and a sample day to show how they fit together.

Priority 1: protein first

When you eat less overall, protein is the nutrient most at risk, and it is the one protecting your muscle while you lose weight. Most plans aim for roughly 90 to 100 grams per day, spread over the day. Always confirm your personal target with your doctor or dietitian.

  • Easy wins: Greek yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, chicken, fish, tofu, protein shakes.
  • Habit: eat the protein on your plate first, before anything else.

Priority 2: fiber, gently

Fiber keeps digestion moving, which matters because GLP-1 medication slows things down. Build up gradually: a sudden jump in fiber can cause bloating on a sensitive stomach.

  • Good sources: berries, oats, lentils, beans, leafy greens, chia seeds.
  • Start with one added serving a day and increase slowly.

Priority 3: fluids all day

Nausea, headaches and fatigue on GLP-1 medication are often partly dehydration. Thirst signals get quieter along with hunger, so drink on a schedule rather than on feel: a glass with every meal and sips in between.

Priority 4: small portions, slow pace

Your stomach empties more slowly now. Large meals that used to be fine can sit heavily for hours. Smaller plates, slower eating, and stopping at comfortable fullness will do more for how you feel than any superfood.

A simple day of eating

If you would rather not plan every day yourself, that is exactly what our meal plans are for: full weeks mapped out around a GLP-1 appetite, with grocery lists included. And our high-protein recipe collections keep the rotation interesting.

  • Breakfast: Greek yogurt with berries and a spoon of chia seeds.
  • Lunch: a bowl with chicken, quinoa and roasted vegetables.
  • Snack: cottage cheese or a protein shake.
  • Dinner: baked salmon, potatoes and green beans.
  • Through the day: water with every meal and in between.
