GLP-1 and Low Sodium Eating: Flavor Without the Salt

Written by Imaya, GLP-1 Living · Not medical advice · How we write · Updated October 24, 2026

Lower-sodium eating comes up for lots of reasons, and the worry is always the same: will the food be bland? On a GLP-1, with a smaller appetite, flavor matters even more. This is a general overview, not medical advice.

The trick is to swap salt for other flavor: herbs, garlic, citrus, vinegar and spices, built on fresh foods rather than packaged ones.

What does lower-sodium eating usually mean?

In general it means cooking more at home, choosing fresh or frozen over canned and packaged, rinsing canned beans, and reading labels, since most salt comes from processed food rather than the salt shaker. Flavor comes from herbs, garlic, lemon, vinegar and spices instead. Your own sodium target is a question for your doctor.

Foods people lean on

  • Fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit.
  • Beans cooked from dry or rinsed well.
  • Fresh fish, chicken and eggs.
  • Unsalted nuts, herbs, citrus and spices for flavor.
