GLP-1 Maintenance: How to Keep the Weight Off

Written by the GLP-1 Living team · Reviewed August 15, 2026

Losing the weight is one chapter. Keeping it off is the longer one, and it gets far less attention. Whether you stay on a maintenance dose or taper off with your doctor, maintenance is its own phase with its own rules.

Here is a calm framework for it, without extremes and without pretending it happens by itself.

Keep the structure, relax the deficit

The habits that got you here, protein first, planned meals, portions that fit, stay. What changes is the goal: you are no longer eating to lose, you are eating to hold steady. That usually means slightly larger portions inside the same structure, not a return to unplanned eating.

Watch trends, not days

Daily weight bounces around; trends tell the truth. A weekly weigh-in on a fixed morning, written down, is enough. A habit tracker next to it shows why a trend moved, because the answer is usually visible in the week: protein slipped, meals got random, water dropped.

If you taper off medication

Plan the transition with your doctor, and plan your eating before the appetite returns. The first weeks off medication are when structure earns its keep: written meal plans, a grocery list that does the deciding, and a tracker that keeps you honest.

Our maintenance planners were built for exactly this phase: a 90-day food list and habit tracker, and a 4-week maintenance meal planner with batch cooking and grocery lists.

Expect plateaus, and treat them kindly

A flat scale in maintenance is success, not failure. If the trend creeps up, go back to one structured week and reset. The free Plateau Plan walks you through that reset step by step.
